Der später hinzugekommene Preis " Hörspiel des Jahres" wurde 2017 zum dreißigsten Mal vergeben. Mehrere hundert Produktionen wurden in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten ausgezeichnet, von jährlich wechselnden Jurys, die sich aus Publizist/innen und Kritiker/innen zusammensetzten. Das Prinzip des kontinuierlichen Wechsels sorgte für ständige, häufig kontrovers, aber immer produktiv geführte Diskussionen zur Qualität von Stücken, zu den Kriterien der Beurteilung künstlerischer Radio-Produktion und auch zu den Entscheidungen der Jury. Christoph Buggert, selbst Autor und Mitglied des Präsidiums der Akademie, der das Hörspiel als "eine der lebendigsten, phantasievollsten und formal variantenreichsten Kunstgattungen der Gegenwart" bezeichnet hat, lud Autor/ innen, Komponist/innen, Regisseur/innen, Dramaturg/innen und Publizist/innen ein, für diese Hörspiel-Publikation der Akademie Beiträge zu verfassen: Gedankensplitter, Kurz-Essays, Kommentare, Erinnerungsfetzen, Fußnoten, Polemiken und Miszellen zum Zustand und den Perspektiven der Radiokunst.
