Design and 3-D Electromagnetic Modeling of Terahertz Waveguide Mixers and Components

Radio astronomical heterodyne receivers based on waveguide mixers in combination wit h superconducting mixíng devices offer state-of-the-art sensitivity for high resolution spectroscopy up to a frequency of 2 T Hz. This work describes the design, optimization and analysis of waveguide mixer R F environments, pushing their application above frequencies of 1 T Hz. These include all crucial components, i. e. the feed horn, the waveguide, branch-line hybrids, the device's probe and R F choke structures. The developed designs are verified by measurements and, e. g. are used in the flight hardware of the H I F I Band 2 mixers of the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared ( H I F I) on the Herschel Space Observatory.
