Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte war ein mittelmäßig begabter Karriereoffizier, der sich erst in letzter Minute dem Putsch des chilenischen Militärs 1973 anschloss. Seine Diktatur dauerte 17 Jahre, und sein Name wurde zum Inbegriff des Bösen. Friedrich Paul Heller legt nun die erste Biografie des Diktators seit dessen Tod 2006 vor. Dafür hat er umfangreiche, erst jetzt zugängliche Archive eingesehen, darunter im Auswärtigen Amt Berlin, in den U S A, Großbritannien und Chile.
Das Buch behandelt die Frage, wie Pinochet es geschafft hat, zur dominierenden Figur der chilenischen Politik zu werden und wie es ihm gelingen konnte, bis zu seinem Lebensende im Jahr 2006 ungestraft davonzukommen. Eine wichtige Rolle spielte dabei der Inlandsgeheimdienst D I N A ( Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional), auf dessen Aktivitäten der Autor ein besonderes Augenmerk legt.
Dabei legt Hellers Biografie den Schwerpunkt nicht auf die Person, sondern auf die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der politischen Figur Pinochet.
