A superb new Otello from the Salzburg Easter Festival: Cura is a commanding Otello with his richly coloured tenor and both fragile delicacy and fiery ardour ( Südwestpresse). Röschmann as Desdemona guarantees effortless perfection ( Neue Musikzeitung). Álvarez as Iago would be hard to surpass ( Abendzeitung). This Salzburg production featuring a cast worthy of any festival ( Südwestpresse) is conducted by Christian Thielemann, who displays a command of Verdian tragedy to match his celebrated sovereignty in Wagner. He and his great Dresden Staatskapelle, a consummate opera ensemble, achieve wonders ( Die Presse), generating Italian Musikdrama with their incandescence and precise nuances ( Abendzeitung). In his fascinating staging, director Vincent Boussard integrates video with set and lighting design to create an idealized visual context for what he calls Otello s conflict of ancient and modern, of 2 D and 3 D . Boussard s Otello is above all: aesthetic. The nobly designed costumes are from the Parisian fashion designer Christian Lacroix, with whom Boussard has been cooperating for many years. Special attention is given to the handkerchief in this production, the leitmotiv object in which Otello proves the supposed deceit of his wife Desdemona.

William Shakespeare war Giuseppe Verdis Lieblingsdramatiker. Doch gleich auf Platz zwei folgte Friedrich Schiller. Mit dem deutschen Schriftsteller und Bühnenautor verband ihn nicht zuletzt der Kampf für Gedankenfreiheit und das unaufhörliche Streben nach Liberalität und Aufklärung. Deshalb war es nur folgerichtig, dass Verdi in seiner Laufbahn als Komponist mehrere Male Theaterwerke von Schiller in Opern verwandelte. Hier wären etwa die Vertonungen von Giovanna d' Arco ( Die Jungfrau von Orleans), Luisa Miller ( Kabale und Liebe) sowie I Masnadieri ( Die Räuber) zu nennen. Und natürlich darf auch Don Carlos nicht unerwähnt bleiben. Aus diesem Bühnenstück machte Giuseppe Verdi eine Oper in fünf Akten - erste Fassung 1867, später wiederholt überarbeitet -, die inhaltlich die Schwerpunkte im Vergleich zu Schillers Vorlage ein wenig anders setzte. Während Schillers epische Tragödie als intimes Kammerspiel mit streitlustigem Grundton angelegt war, betonte Verdi eher die lyrischen Momente und den Themenkomplex der unerfüllbaren Liebe. Luc Bondy strich in seiner Inszenierung am Pariser Théâtre du Châtelet diesen Aspekt mit erfinderischen Regieeinfällen besonders anschaulich und plakativ heraus. Der gebürtige Züricher, der sich bei den Festspielen in Salzburg, an der Berliner Schaubühne und mit Opernarbeiten wie Lulu und Wozzeck einen Namen gemacht hat, ließ damals seine Akteure den Konflikt zwischen Liebessehnsucht und Liebesentzug in einem stilsicher und geschmackvoll eingerichteten Ambiente austragen. Kostümdesignerin Moidele Bickel und Bühnenbildner Gilles Aillaud haben dafür ein klares Konzept mit strengen, aber wunderschönen Farben und Formen entworfen. Mithilfe des Orchestre de Paris hat eine renommierte Riege internationaler Stars diese zu Recht hochgelobte Aufführung mit ihrer Sangeskunst veredelt. Robert Alagna, der sein Debüt in La Traviata gab und seither in vielen wunderbaren Produktionen zu sehen war, überzeugte in der Titelrolle sowohl stimmlich als auch schauspielerisch. Die begnadete Karita Mattila aus Finnland meisterte in der Figur der Elisabeth de Valois komplizierteste Passagen scheinbar mühelos und legte viel Hingabe in ihre Partie. Die stets verlässliche Waltraud Meier, bekannt vor allem als Wagner-Sängerin, zeigte als Prinzessin Eboli einmal mehr, dass sie mit Fug und Recht zur Elite der europäischen Klassik-Interpretinnen gerechnet wird. Opulentes Opernspektakel aus London: Verdis Vêpres siciliennes mit Bryan Hymel auf D V D

Es war das Beste, was England im Verdi-Jahr 2013 zu bieten hatte, ein Glanzstück der Operninterpretation: Die Inszenierung von Verdis Les Vêpres siciliennes ( Die sizilianische Vesper) am Londoner Royal Opera House. Die Produktion mit der Tenor-Entdeckung Bryan Hymel, mit Lianna Haroutounian, Erwin Schrott, Michael Volle und Maestro Antonio Pappano am Pult hat Geschichte geschrieben. Sie gewann den Olivier Award. Jetzt erscheint sie auf D V D.

Zur Bedeutung dieses Projekts gehört auch, dass Verdis Sizilianische Vesper nicht in der bekannteren italienischen, sondern in der französischen Fassung, entstanden für die Pariser Opéra, inszeniert wurde. Erst als Verdi dort einen Riesenerfolg verbuchen konnte, arbeitete er die Oper für Italien um - unter Verzicht auf die großen Tableaux, wie sie für die französische Grand Opéra typisch waren. Der Regisseur Stefan Herheim gestaltete auf Grundlage der Handlung um den Volksaufstand und das Massaker von Palermo 1282 üppige, sich brechende und wiederspiegelnde Bilder von Gewaltherrschaft, Verrat und Rache - versetzt ins Jahr 1855, dem Jahr der Pariser Uraufführung. Unter Herheims Regie wurde die verschwenderische Ausstattung der Grand Opéra zum Ausdrucksmittel intensivster Emotionen - passend zur Leistung der Solisten. Besonders im Fokus: der amerikanische Tenor Bryan Hymel, der im Rahmen eines Exklusiv-Vertrages mit Warner Classics gerade sein erstes Album Héroïque präsentiert. Als höhenstarker Sänger mit bruchlos geführter Prachtstimme feierte er als Henri, Verdis höchster Tenorpartie, Triumphe bei Publikum und Kritik.

The grand scale and magnificent acoustics of the Roman arena in Verona are ideally suited to the pageantry of Verdi's Egyptian opera, presented here in a staging that is true to the original 1913 production, framed by obelisks and sphinxes and filled with chorus and dancers. Chinese soprano Hui He has won international acclaim for her portrayal of the eponymous slave girl whose forbidden love for the war hero Radamés ( Marco Berti, the experienced Verdi tenor) brings death to them both.
