In der dunkelsten Stunde der Solidarnosc, als die Militärherrschaft in Polen fast die Demokratie zerstörte, war Góreckis Musik die mächtigste Stimme des Protestes eine Parole der Unterdrückten, ein Symbol der Hoffnung. Wahrscheinlich ist das der Grund für die unglaubliche Popularität seiner Musik in Osteuropa. Zudem war Góreckis Dritte Symphonie eine musikalische Sensation. Mit der Aufnahme der London Sinfonietta unter David Zinman und mit dem Sopransolo Dawn Upshaws im September 1992 eroberte sich die Sinfonie Herzen der Massen. Die Sinfonie führte lange Zeit die Klassikcharts mehrer Länder an und belegte einen unglaublichen sechsten Platz in der Pop-Hitparade. Górecki schrieb die Sinfonie 1976, zu einer Zeit als er im politischen Sinn eine Unperson war und seine Musik in seinem Geburtsort Kattowitz, etwa 20 Minuten von Auschwitz entfernt, verboten war. 1970 fand er ein Buch über die deutsche Besatzung; in den Fußnoten standen verschiedene Beispiele für in Gefängnismauern gekratzte Nachrichten. Mama, don t cry/ Weine nicht, Mama, die Botschaft eines Mädchens, inspirierte ihn zu seiner dritten Symphonie, der Symphony of Sorrowful Songs/ Sinfonie der Klagelieder. Dieser emotionale, verstörende und starke des preisgekrönten Regisseurs Tony Palmer enthält eine Aufführung der Dritten Symphonie mit der London Sinfonietta, David Zinman und Dawn Upshaw.
