Diese Aufführung von Pjotr Tschaikowskys weltberühmtem Ballett Der Nussknacker orientiert sich an der klassischen Inszenierung Lev Ivanovs, der 1892 die Uraufführung des Stücks choreografierte. Das Ergebnis ist eine überwältigende Sinnesreise in die Welt des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts. So ähnlich könnte das Publikum der Uraufführung das Ballett erlebt haben, als es 1892 Ivanovs Ur-Inszenierung beiwohnte. Diese Rekonstruktion der Balletturfassung durch das Royal Ballet ist selbst schon in seinem eigenen Recht ein Repertoireklassiker: Mehr als 30 Jahre befindet sich diese Version des Stücks nun schon im Programm des Royal Ballet. Mit Lauren Cuthbertson als Zuckerfee und Federico Bonelli als Prinz sowie Francesca Hayward als Clara ist dieser Live-Mitschnitt äußerst hochkarätig besetzt. Tschaikowsky: Illusions like Swan Lake (John Neumeier) [DVD]

Created in 1976 by John Neumeier for the Hamburg Ballet ' Illusions like Swan Lake' transposes the magic of Petipa and Ivanov ballet in the castles of Ludwig I I of Bavaria. This sensitive king, obsessed by the swan symbol, drowned himself in the lake of Berg Castle. Following this background, the American choreographer created relevant links between Prince Siegfried from the ballet, Louis I I and Tchaikovsky. As a tormented man, the composer was also fleeing reality. and the ballet describes withdrawal that relentlessly leads to madness. Soloist Jirí Bubenícek stars as the King with Anna Polikarpova as Odette, Elizabeth Loscavio as Natalia and the Corps de Ballet of the Hamburg Ballet. Unavailable on video for many years this edition was filmed by John Neumeier. It contains interviews and a personal off-commentary of the ballet by the choreographer.

Marius Petipa's demanding but enchanting choreography of Tchaikovsky's romantic fairytale The Sleeping Beauty is one of the best-loved of all classical ballets. This recording of Anthony Dowell's gloriously romantic 1994 production, with charming, dreamlike designs by Maria Bjørnson, features an all-star cast led by Viviana Durante as a charismatic Princess Aurora, Zoltán Solymosi as a delightful Prince Florimund and Anthony Dowell as a wonderfully dishevelled Carabosse. The Royal Ballet, in exceptionally fine form, is beautifully accompanied by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, conducted by Barry Wordsworth.

Als erste Blu-ray-Veröffentlichung hat das Mariinsky-Label mit den Sinfonien Nr. 4-6 von Peter Tschaikowsky ein Repertoire ausgesucht, für das sowohl Valery Gergiev als auch das Mariinsky Orchester weltweit derzeit als erste Adresse gelten. Gemeinsam liefern sie so etwas wie definitive Interpretationen dieser drei Sinfonien ab. Wie bei kaum einem anderen Sinfoniker sind Tschaikowskys drei letzte Sinfonien mit den Themen ' Schicksal' und ' Tod' verknüpft. Unter der Regie von Andy Sommer wurde eine Aufführung im geschichtsträchtigen Pariser Salle Pleyel im Januar 2010 musikalisch einfühlsam gefilmt, so dass hier zum musikalischen noch der optische Genuss kommt. Als informatives Extra gibt es ein Interview mit Valery Gergiev.

Für die Sinfonie Nr. 4 empfand Tschaikowsky sein Leben lang eine besondere Affinität. Am Ende des Jahres 1878 schrieb er über die Sinfonie: " Ich verehre dieses Kind von mir zutiefst; es gehört zu den wenigen Werken von mir, das mich nicht enttäuscht hat. " Das Violinkonzert von Tschaikowsky in D-Dur ging durch das Konzert mit dem russischen Geiger A. Brodskii in London im Jahr 1882 als " Richter Konzert" in die Musikgeschichte ein. Tschaikowsky selbst bewunderte den Mut des jungen Musikers, vor einem westlichen Publikum mit einem Werk eines russischen Komponisten aufzuwarten. Überall in Europa hatte die Aufführung des Violinkonzertes außergewöhnlichen Erfolg.
