? Peter Sellars' gefeierte Neuproduktion dieser zwei Meisterwerke war einer der großen Höhepunkte am Teatro Real. Orchester und Besetzung, darunter Ekaterina Scherbachenko und Paul Groves, gelangen unter der kühnen und einfühlsamen Leitung von Teodor Currentzis in seltene Höhen des poetischen Ausdrucks.
? " Jolanthe", eine späte Komposition von Tschaikowsky, wurde 1892 uraufgeführt und enthält alle Facetten der Meisterschaft des Komponisten: schöne Melodien, eine klare Struktur und echte Leidenschaft in ihren vielen Variationen.
? " Persephone" hat nur einen Sänger ( Paul Groves), der in der Rolle des Priesters Eumolpus weitgehend als Erzähler fungiert. Die Orchestrierung ist melodiös, mit Holzblas- oder Blechblassoli, die ein fesselndes, oftmals geradezu keckes Thema über eine einfache rhythmische Begleitung legen.

Die Tschaikowsky-Oper ist zwar musikalisch stark, fällt aber manchmal zu didaktisch aus. Persephone dagegen ist von außergewöhnlicher Schönheit. Dominique Blanc und Paul Groves glänzen in der Titelrolle bzw. als Eumolpus. Ein Hauch von Genie aber liegt in Sellars' Entscheidung, das Stück nicht im Sinne des Balletts, sondern des fernöstlichen Tanzes neu zu interpretieren. The Bolshoi orchestra is the pride of Russia's performing culture. Its performance is marked by faultless technique and the finest sense of ensemble. It involves first-class musicians, many of whom are winners of international competitions and teachers of musical institutions. The Bolshoi choir performance is highly successful and it forms an important element of any ballet.
The basic libretto ot the Nutcracker has as many interpretations as there are staged versions The characters' names often change and plot twists are added. The only constant is the music. Tchaikovsky's musical genius created one of the most recognizable and enduring scores ever written. An abbreviated version, the Nutcracker Suite, is one of the most recorded selections in classical repertoire. In the final analysis, it is the music that has truly given the Nurcracker a life of its own.
The Nutcracker is set in Western Europe during the 1800's. A doctor and town Mayor, Hans Stahlbaum delights in holding large holiday gatherings for family and friends. His two children, Clara and Fritz, anxiously await the arrival of guests. The snow evokes a pleasant festive atmosphere as the guests arrive. Tardy as always, Clara's godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer arrives with special fanfare. He causes quite a stir and then entertains and delights all onlookers with his exquisite mechanical dolls. All the children receive gifts with Fritz getting a rocking hobby train. A bit jealous, Clara approaches Drosselmeyer for her gift. He teases her with a presentation of a mother mouse. Fritz pulls a baby mouse from the mother mouse's apron and sends Clara scampering. Drosselmeyer quickly makes amends and presents Clara with an unusual prize, a colourful Nutcracker. Delighted, Clara instantly is enthralled with the gift. Sibling rivalry takes hold and in a tussle to wrest the Nutcracker away from Clara, Fritz breaks him. Drosselmeyer repairs the poor Nutcracker, but Clara is disappointed. Drosselmeyer promises that all will be well. Evening overtakes the party and the guests depart. Clara is shooed to bed. All is quiet in the Stahlbaum resideny, or is it? Clara has awakened and longing for her Nutcracker comes back to the living room. She quickly finds her doll and falls asleep again. There begins her magical dream. . .

Tchaikovsky: Eugene Onegin [2 DVDs]

Three romantic heroes each with a solitary destiny: Tatiana, a Romanesque young woman seeking absolution, Onegin, a distant dandy hiding emptiness under affected haughtiness, and Lenski, abandoned by his literary idol. Between these three, barren affections presage the inexorable social ruin. All the resources of the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow are brought to bear to ensure this opera performance is exceptional evening of theatre and song: a vocal line-up of the highest order with notably the baritone Mariusz Kwiecien and the Bolshoi Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Alexander Vedernikov. With a stage setting as sombre as it is effective - a great dining table appears in the middle of a salon - the director Dmitri Tcherniakov separates two different worlds and lends the drama a clarity rarely reached. The exceptional quality of this production, and the great success encountered by its first edition on D V D, inevitably led to the remastering in high-definition of this program to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its original release. It is now and for the first time also available on Blu-ray.

Based on Gogol's fantastical and comic story of the Devil's antics on Christmas Eve, this magical blend of opera and ballet is brought to vivid life in Francesca Zambello's colourful production. Magnificent set designs ( Mikhail Mokrov) and costumes ( Tatiana Noginova), and an excellent, largely Russian cast provide authenticity. Splendid dancing by The Royal Ballet and Cossack dancers completes the spectacle. Filmed in High Definition and recorded in true surround sound.

Wer kennt es nicht Tschaikowskys berühmtes Ballett Der Nussknacker nach der Geschichte von E. T. A. Hoffmann. Im Amsterdamer Musiktheater gelang 2011 eine neue Version der ursprünglich 1892 im Mariinsky-Theater in St. Petersburg aufgeführten Fassung auf die Bühne. Zu jener Zeit wurde das Stück nach nur 14 Aufführungen abgesetzt. Heute jedoch erfreut es sich ganz besonders zur Weihnachtszeit großer Beliebtheit. Viele Kompagnien führen das Stück in ihrem Repertoire und interpretieren es immer wieder neu.
Auch die beiden Choreographen Wayne Eagling und Toer van Schayk widmeten sich diesem Ballett und schufen mit Der Nussknacker und der Mäusekönig eine neue Inszenierung, die bereits 1996 seine Premiere erlebte und 2011 erneut mit dem niederländischen Nationalballett in Amsterdam aufgeführt wurde. Eagling und van Schayk verlegten die Handlung nach Amsterdam des Jahres 1810 und ersetzten die üblichen Festtage zu Weihnachten durch die traditionelle niederländische Feier am Sinterklaas-Abend. Und so nimmt die faszinierende Geschichte um Clara Staalboom ihren Lauf. . .

P. I. Tschaikowsky gilt als der große Sinfoniker Russlands. In seiner Musik gelang ihm eine Synthese aus der nationalen russischen Musiksprache und den kompositionstechnischen Formen der westeuropäischen Romantik. Seine berühmtesten Ballette nehmen wegen ihrer melodischen Intensität und instrumentalen Brillanz einen Spitzenplatz im klassischen Balletrepertoire ein. In dem 1814 veröffentlichten Märchen " Nußknacker und Mäusekönig" des deutschen Romantikers E. T. A. Hoffmann, auf das Tschaikowskys Ballett basiert, bildet das Weihnachtsfest den realistischen Rahmen für eine fantastische Handlung. Fiktion und Wirklichkeit sind durch seltsame und wunderbare Begebenheiten zu einem faszinierenden und unergründlichen Labyrinth verwoben. Mit der literarischen Figur des Uhrmachers Drosselmeier, der sein Leben durch seine Arbeit ordnet, konnten sich sowohl Hoffmann als auch Tschaikowsky, der in seinem fünfzigsten Lebensjahr mit der Komposition begann, identifizieren. Auf den Tag genau 107 Jahre nach der St. Petersburger Uraufführung hatte Patrice Barts Choreografier von Tschaikowskys Welterfolg " Der Nußknacker" im Jahre 1999 an der Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin Premiere. Bart stellte dem Ballett einen Prolog voran, in dem er Marie als Kind entführen läßt und alles in einen heutigen Kontext stellt.
